How do metals react? - Question in General Science

 Reactions of metals

There are some non-metals that can do one or two of the following things:

1. The jewellery is made of gold

2. Electricity cable is made of copper

3. Car body panels are made of steel.

4. Aluminum can be drawn out into thin wire without breaking.

Many crystals, for example, shine and reflect light, but they do not conduct electricity. graphite is a type of carbon which conducts electricity well, but it is brittle and breaks easily. many plastics can be drawn out into threads and can change shape without breaking, but they do not conduct electricity.

Only metals have high melting points and can reflect lights, conduct electricity, have their shape changed, and be drawn out into wire without breaking.

Since the Bronze age, about 4000 years ago, people have been extracting metals from the earth. they have melted these metals to make tools and weapons. they have used them either pure, as in iron, or mixed them to make alloys. a mixture of metals or a mixture of metal and any other element is known as an alloy.

Understanding the properties of metals:

why do metals behave as they do? the answer lies in the way the metal atoms are joined together.

Metals are Dense

Most metals are much denser than non-metals. The density of copper, for example, is about 9 g/cm^3 and that of gold is about 20 g/cm^3. This high density is due to the closely packed atoms. The diagram shows how regular layers of atoms make up a large structure.

Metals are Malleable and Ductile

Although metals are dense and strong, they can be easily shaped by hitting them with a hammer. Metals such as copper can also be pulled into long, thin wires. This happens because the pushing or pulling forces make the layers of atoms in the crystals slip over one another. the metal does not break, but it does change its shape.

Metals conduct electricity and heat

In metals, atoms are held close together, their outermost electrons are not tied to any atom and they are free to move. We can think of the electrons as forming a sea around the much larger, positive ions.

When an electric voltage is connected to the metal, an electric current flows because the electrons are free to move. Non-metals do not have a 'sea' of free electrons in their structure so they do not conduct electricity. they are insulators.

How do metals react?

With water

When metals are put into water, some react and some do not. Sodium and potassium react violently, giving off lots of hydrogen gas and forming alkalies. Magnesium reacts very slowly with cold water but reacts violently with steam. Unreactive metals such as gold, do not react with water or steam.

With acids

When metals are put into dilute acids, a similar thing happens. a few unreactive metals do not react with ais, just as they do not react with water. However, some metals, such as magnesium, which do not react with water, do react with acids, producing lots of hydrogen gas. Metals such as calcium, sodium,, and potassium react so violently that they should never be added to acid.

With air/oxygen

Many metals react so slowly with the oxygen in the air that it is not always easy to compare them. However, reactive metals, such as magnesium, burn easily in oxygen, producing oxides. Calcium, sodium, and potassium also react very quickly in the air but not as violently as in water. Metals such as gold and silver do not react and stay shiny in the air.
