How to do reading in an effective way? 

Reading is an art and it needs the skill to get the maximum benefits from reading. Different readers have their own set of habits for reading books as there are two types of eating: one is to eat for nourishment and the other one is to get pleasure. My approach to reading is quite different. I read it to improve my intellect and vocabulary. Eating for nourishment is generally done hastily without much thought, but eating for pleasure can often take hours. It is a very painstaking job. I see reading books in a similar light. Most people read books for the breadth of knowledge, while a smaller group of people read them for depth. They see the writer's point of view from a different angle.

There are five stages of reading a text:

• Pre-reading
• Reading
• Responding
• Exploring
• Applying

We're trained from a young age that books have to be read cover to cover, from beginning to end. We are just asked to read the books. we do it only for the sake of reading. That's related to pre-reading. We don't get much from this reading. this pre-reading leads to reading for some purpose. This reading may be based on some preparation for the exam or some assignments in general. But a real stage comes when we respond to that reading which we read for our thoughts. This leads to exploring and we start doing analyses. This knowledge helps us get through the current issues whenever we try to apply this knowledge.

At the early stage the reader tries to finish the book that he starts reading, but this a quite an irrational approach to reading. Later, with the passage of time the reader tries to read as much as he wishes to read and comes to the conclusion. But when we find that the more books we read, the quicker we are able to make connections to other things we've read that help us to understand the material of the current book. Thus, we read to make connections, not for deep understanding on our first pass through a subject.

Our knowledge starts steering us to use itself according to the situation that arises. From the connection viewpoint, one strategy we may use to get through books faster as well as form our own opinions on a subject matter is to read multiple books on the same subject at the same time. Oftentimes, the authors provide very convincing arguments that don't completely line up, forcing us to think more carefully about what we want to take away from the books.

Thus to me, most books that we read are read with the intention of gaining a breadth of knowledge and not the depth of knowledge. This allows us to go through most books in a single week, and spend more time learning in more dense books. Time has its own test of knowledge and we walk through all dimensions of life with this studied bookish knowledge that may sometimes help us or sometimes go without any occurrence.

ہم چھوٹی عمر سے ہی تربیت یافتہ ہیں کہ کتابیں شروع سے آخر تک کور ٹو کور پڑھنی پڑتی ہیں۔ ہم سے صرف کتابیں پڑھنے کو کہا جاتا ہے۔ ہم یہ صرف پڑھنے کی خاطر کرتے ہیں۔ اس کا تعلق پہلے سے پڑھنے سے ہے۔ ہم اس پڑھنے سے زیادہ حاصل نہیں کرتے ہیں۔ یہ پہلے سے پڑھنا کسی مقصد کے لیے پڑھنے کی طرف جاتا ہے۔ یہ پڑھنا امتحان کی تیاری یا عمومی طور پر کچھ اسائنمنٹس پر مبنی ہو سکتا ہے۔ لیکن ایک حقیقی مرحلہ آتا ہے جب ہم اس پڑھنے کا جواب دیتے ہیں جسے ہم اپنے خیالات کے لیے پڑھتے ہیں۔ یہ دریافت کرنے کی طرف جاتا ہے اور ہم تجزیہ کرنا شروع کر دیتے ہیں۔ جب بھی ہم اس علم کو بروئے کار لانے کی کوشش کرتے ہیں تو یہ علم ہمیں موجودہ مسائل سے نمٹنے میں مدد کرتا ہے۔

ابتدائی مرحلے میں قاری اس کتاب کو ختم کرنے کی کوشش کرتا ہے جسے وہ پڑھنا شروع کرتا ہے، لیکن پڑھنے کے لیے یہ ایک غیر معقول طریقہ ہے۔ بعد میں وقت گزرنے کے ساتھ قاری جتنا پڑھنا چاہتا ہے پڑھنے کی کوشش کرتا ہے اور اس نتیجے پر پہنچتا ہے۔ لیکن جب ہمیں معلوم ہوتا ہے کہ ہم جتنی زیادہ کتابیں پڑھتے ہیں، اتنی ہی تیزی سے ہم دوسری چیزوں سے رابطہ قائم کرنے کے قابل ہو جاتے ہیں جو ہم نے پڑھی ہیں جو موجودہ کتاب کے مواد کو سمجھنے میں ہماری مدد کرتی ہیں۔ اس طرح، ہم کنکشن بنانے کے لیے پڑھتے ہیں، نہ کہ کسی موضوع سے اپنے پہلے گزرنے پر گہری تفہیم کے لیے۔

Ans: KWL, an acronym for Know, Want-to-know, and a Learned person do it in an effective way to read with purpose. KWL is easy to apply and can lead to significant improvement in your ability to learn efficiently. It also helps you to retain what you have learned. It makes you more confident and vigilant in your hour of need. It makes you more capable to tackle critical situations. If you keep on learning and it is quite possible that one day you might have learnt that nobody would have learnt so far. Inquiry and curiosity into the nature of things lead one to understand and accept the ground realities of life. Thus KWL is as follows:

KNOW	WANT-TO-KNOW	LEARNED
Before reading, assess and record what one knows.	Set a purpose for one's reading. What does one want to learn from the text? As one reads, maintain focus on one's purpose.	After reading, reflect, note and review what one has learned from one's reading.
